English Club
The English club was initiated to address a critical issue in our community. Many low-income Chinese-American students are unaware of the importance of completing four years of regular English coursework to become eligible for college admission. Instead, they often find themselves taking assisted English classes that do not fulfill their A-G requirements.
At the English Club, we're committed to making a difference. We understand the vital role English proficiency plays in shaping academic futures. That's why we gather to engage in conversations, facilitate vocabulary lessons, and enjoy educational shows with our tutees.
Activites
Below are some activities that I used to improve my tutees chronological speech, reading comprehension, and writing.
However, I also recommend starting each lesson with learning three vocabulary words from either a book or the TOEFL Vocab List.
Maze Game
This activity helps with chronological speech. To set it up you will pull up a picture of a maze for timing purposes and the tutee takes turns to move through the maze, each time they move they must add a sentence to the story. Each player contributes a few sentences until a complete story is created.
Book Discussion
For book discussions I recommend assigned reading for more comprehensible books like Hunger Games or Animal Farm. During these discussions read alongside the tutee and focus the lesson on the themes, symbols, motifs, and diction authors use to enhance their story. Also highlight the roles and development of each character in a story. This will help tutees more easily remember vocabulary or phrases they may not fully understand.
Practice Writing
In this activities utilize the UC's personal insight questions(PIQS) such as "What have you done to make your school or community a better place?" to help the tutee become a strong and authentic story teller.
